8 New Book Releases to Read in June!

left: pinterest, right: we heart it

Here we are with a fresh batch of new releases not to miss this month! I'm positive most of these will be great summer reads. This time I bring you eight books, which is not a lot... it seems like the more I read, the pickier I get. I'm honestly tired of most YA fantasy releases that feature yet another plain but beautiful warrior who saves the world while riding the instalove unicorn with the most gorgeous male ever; I'm also tired of murder mysteries with predictable or non-sensical twists that don't bother giving life to their characters; and I'm SO tired of adult romance novels with the same old plots and lazy writing.

In all fairness, some of the following books may seem like that to you. Which either means that a) they're from an author I usually read, or b) I'm hoping to god they're better than the blurbs. I can tell you right now, K.A. Tucker, Loreth Anne White, and Taylor Jenkins Reid are authors I always keep an eye on. I'm not too crazy about Mariana Zapata, but Dear Aaron has an interesting enough plot. And Final Girls, well, it could be awesome, it could be awful. Stephen King liked it, so I'm willing to find out. Maybe.

The remaining three books I am genuinely interested in: The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue sounds fun and different; I've been meaning to start the Monsters of Verity series for a while now; and anything Outlander is immediately at the top of my list!

Ten years ago, college student Quincy Carpenter went on vacation with five friends and came back alone, the only survivor of a horror movie–scale massacre. In an instant, she became a member of a club no one wants to belong to—a group of similar survivors known in the press as the Final Girls. Now, Quincy is doing well—maybe even great, thanks to her Xanax prescription. She has a caring almost-fiancé, Jeff; a popular baking blog; a beautiful apartment; and a therapeutic presence in Coop, the police officer who saved her life all those years ago. Her memory won’t even allow her to recall the events of that night; the past is in the past.

That is, until Lisa, the first Final Girl, is found dead in her bathtub, wrists slit, and Sam, the second, appears on Quincy's doorstep. Blowing through Quincy's life like a whirlwind, Sam seems intent on making Quincy relive the past, with increasingly dire consequences, all of which makes Quincy question why Sam is really seeking her out. And when new details about Lisa's death come to light, Quincy's life becomes a race against time as she tries to unravel Sam's truths from her lies, evade the police and hungry reporters, and, most crucially, remember what really happened at Pine Cottage, before what was started ten years ago is finished.

Ruby Santos knew exactly what she was getting herself into when she signed up to write a soldier overseas.
The guidelines were simple: one letter or email a week for the length of his or her deployment. Care packages were optional. Been there, done that. She thought she knew what to expect. What she didn’t count on was falling in love with the guy.
